Saudi Arabia Trade Surplus Hits $103.56B in 2024

Saudi Arabia's trade balance reached $103.56B in 2024 (World Bank). That figure represents the kingdom's largest surplus since oil peaked above $100 per barrel in 2013.

The scale becomes apparent against other major economies. Saudi Arabia's surplus exceeds the entire US trade deficit by over 10%, though the United States runs a $981.65B deficit across all categories. The Saudi number reflects pure energy dominance in a market where supply constraints drive pricing power.

Brent crude trades at $71.11 per barrel. Saudi Arabia's fiscal breakeven sits near $68, leaving minimal cushion but enough to maintain the current account position. The kingdom produced approximately 11.4 million barrels per day in 2024, holding its OPEC+ quota despite pressure from consuming nations to increase output.

Revenue concentration remains extreme. Petroleum Exports account for roughly 78% of total export value, with petrochemicals adding another 12%. Saudi exports outside hydrocarbons have grown but remain negligible relative to the energy complex. The kingdom exported $347.2B in goods during 2024, meaning non-oil products contributed less than $75B.

The structural shift is supply management rather than volume expansion. Saudi Arabia cut production by 1.3 million barrels per day from 2022 peaks, prioritizing price over market share. That strategy has worked. Average realized prices rose 8.4% year-over-year despite flat global demand growth in the 3.1% range.

Russia's energy export data shows a different pattern. Moscow's trade surplus dropped to $67.8B as Western sanctions redirected flows to lower-margin Asian buyers. Saudi Arabia captured the premium European market share Russia vacated, selling at Brent-linked contracts while Russian crude trades at $4-6 discounts.

The import side tells the infrastructure story. Saudi Arabia imported $243.6B in goods, with capital equipment for NEOM and other Vision 2030 projects driving machinery purchases up 23% annually. Aluminum Imports rose 34% by volume as construction activity accelerated, pushing the kingdom's aluminum trade deficit to $2.1B despite domestic smelting capacity.

Market participants price Saudi policy through the forward curve rather than spot transactions. December 2025 Brent futures trade at $74.80, embedding expectations that production cuts continue through next year's peak driving season. The kingdom's spare capacity sits at 2.8 million barrels per day, providing the swing vote on global supply.

UAE's trade performance offers a Gulf comparison point. The Emirates ran a $54.7B surplus with more diversified export streams including re-exports through Dubai and Abu Dhabi's financial services. UAE non-oil exports grew 11.2% while Saudi Arabia's comparable category managed only 4.3% growth.

The narrative focuses on diversification progress, but the mathematics remain stark. For every $10 decline in oil prices, Saudi Arabia's trade balance shrinks by roughly $18B annually at current production levels. The Vision 2030 industrial projects have not yet reached the scale needed to offset energy revenue volatility.

Copper at $12,951 per tonne signals global industrial demand strength that should support oil consumption. But the price action reflects supply constraints rather than consumption growth, a dynamic that benefits Saudi Arabia's production management strategy while raising questions about long-term demand trajectories.

Watch Saudi Arabia's current account against the 12-month Brent forward curve. If the curve inverts below $70, the fiscal arithmetic changes quickly.
