North Korea’s population growth has slowed dramatically over the 65‑year span from 1961 to 2025, falling from an early rate of 2.26 % to a mere 0.30 % in 2025, the lowest figure among 155 economies. The annual increase peaked at 2.88 % in 1968, a period that coincided with post‑war reconstruction and high fertility, before entering a long‑term decline driven by persistent economic hardship, restrictive migration policies and ageing demographics. By contrast, Brazil’s growth of 0.32 % and France’s 0.28 % in the same year illustrate that even modestly expanding populations are outpacing the DPRK. The all‑time trough recorded in 2025 underscores the demographic challenges facing the regime, including a shrinking labor force and heightened pressure on social services. Unless substantial policy reforms improve living standards, health outcomes and openness to migration, the near‑zero growth trajectory is likely to persist, potentially leading to a natural decrease in the near future.
