Sri Lanka’s Consumer Price Index reached 368.91 in 2025, marking its highest level in over six decades of recorded data and reflecting sustained inflationary pressures. Starting at just 1.49 in 1960, the index has expanded more than 247 times, with the steepest increases concentrated in recent years amid economic instability, currency depreciation, and fiscal imbalances. The 2025 reading places Sri Lanka at rank 24 globally, positioning it between Kazakhstan at 342.39 and Mongolia at 321.03, both of which report lower price levels despite facing similar regional and commodity-driven challenges. Unlike peers such as Burundi and São Tomé and Principe, which report even higher indices, Sri Lanka’s inflation trajectory has been shaped significantly by domestic policy shifts, energy import costs, and tax reforms. The persistence of double-digit inflation into 2025 suggests entrenched price pressures that have yet to fully respond to central bank tightening. Without structural fiscal reforms, improved foreign exchange reserves, and stabilized monetary policy, the current high-inflation trend is likely to persist in the near term.
