Overview
Japan's renewable energy stood at 8.80% in 2021, a rise of +0.30% from 2020. Japan ranked 151st globally.
Japan’s share of renewable energy in total final consumption rose from 4.30 percent in 1990 to a record 8.80 percent in 2021, the same level recorded by peers such as Dominica and Aruba and placing Japan at rank 151 globally. The lowest point occurred in 1994 when the share fell to 3.30 percent, after which a gradual upward trajectory began, accelerating in the 2010s as policy incentives and feed‑in tariffs were introduced. Over the 32‑year span, the increase reflects both the expansion of solar photovoltaic capacity and the modest growth of wind and hydro resources, although the renewable share remains well below the 30‑plus percent targets set for 2030 by many OECD economies. Compared with Malta and Mauritius, which have reached 8.60 percent, Japan’s progress is comparable but still lagging behind the rapid transitions observed in smaller island states. Continued reforms in grid integration and greater investment in offshore wind are likely to sustain the upward trend and could push the renewable share beyond the current peak in the coming decade.
