Overview
Mauritius's youth literacy rate stood at 100.70% in 2025, a rise of +0.90pp from 2023. Based on recent trends, this figure is projected to reach 100.70% by 2025. Mauritius ranked 5th globally.
Mauritius recorded a youth literacy rate of 100.70% in 2025, ranking fifth globally and marking its highest level since data collection began in 1990, when the rate stood at 91.19%. Over the 35-year period, the country achieved a sustained improvement of over nine percentage points, reflecting consistent investment in education and effective policy implementation. The 2025 figure places Mauritius just below peer nations such as Belize, which reported a rate of 100.93%, and slightly above Saudi Arabia at 100.61%. With seven years of coverage in the World Bank dataset, the trajectory shows a clear convergence toward universal youth literacy. The rate surpassing 100% may reflect methodological adjustments or revisions in population estimates rather than literal saturation. Given the near-universal literacy levels achieved, future progress will likely be marginal unless focused on maintaining quality and inclusivity across demographic subgroups. Sustained attention to educational equity and data accuracy will be essential to preserving this achievement in the long term.
