Côte d’Ivoire’s youth literacy rate has risen from 48.51 % in 1988 to 66.84 % in 2021, placing the country 44th globally according to the World Bank. The indicator reached its all‑time peak of 68.12 % in 2019 after a prolonged expansion of primary education and targeted adult‑learning programmes, while the lowest point of 47.06 % occurred in 1998 amid political instability and limited school infrastructure. Over the seven years for which data are available, the upward trajectory has outpaced that of neighbouring Burkina Faso (62.67 %) and approached the level of Benin (65.32 %). Continued investment in universal primary schooling, coupled with digital learning initiatives, could sustain the modest gains and potentially push the rate above the 70 % threshold in the next decade.
