Overview
Kiribati's youth literacy rate stood at 90.44% in 2019, a decline of +6.72pp from 2018. Kiribati ranked 49th globally.
Kiribati’s youth literacy rate fell sharply from its all‑time peak of 97.16 % in 2018 to 90.44 % in 2019, placing the nation 49th in the world according to the World Bank. This 6.72‑percentage‑point decline represents the only observed change over the two‑year coverage and marks a trough that coincides with the most recent data point. By comparison, regional peers such as Zimbabwe recorded a higher rate of 92.51 % and Nepal an even higher 94.24 % in the same period, suggesting that Kiribati’s recent slide is out of step with comparable developing economies. The abrupt drop may reflect disruptions in schooling, limited access to educational resources, or demographic shifts affecting school‑age populations. If policy interventions strengthen teacher training, expand digital learning platforms, and improve school infrastructure, the downward trajectory could be reversed, allowing Kiribati to regain its earlier literacy level and improve its standing among peer nations.
